Melanoma: Cancer of the Skin
Melanoma is a cancer of the skin that is malignant and prominently can be found on the skin but can also be found in the bowel and even the eye. Melanoma cancer is a type of skin cancer that affects about 5% of people diagnosed with skin cancer.
In every year, Malignant Melanoma Cancer is responsible for over 75% of all skin cancer related deaths. Melanoma is the rarest of skin cancers but it causes the most skin cancer related deaths. However, by lowering exposure to risk factors such as exposure to Ultraviolet or UV radiation, Melanoma Cancer can be prevented. Overexposure to UV radiation is the major cause of skin cancer.
Melanoma Skin Cancer is caused by melanocytes, which is the uncontrolled growth of pigment cells known. The only cure for melanoma is to surgically remove the tumor before it grows to a size of 1mm. As reported by WHO, there are close to 160,000 new cases of melanoma cancers worldwide and every year there are approximately 48,000 deaths related to melanoma breast cancer, melanoma brain cancer and melanoma lung cancer, each year as well. 75% of all deaths from skin cancer are associated to malignant melanoma cancer.
How to lower risk of Melanoma Cancer?
In fact, directly or indirectly UV radiation damages the DNA. Sunlight is a source of UV radiation and it usually at its peak between 10 am and 4 p.m. Therefore, you can lower the risk of this type of cancer, if you can limit or avoid the sunlight at these peak hours. Wearing sunscreen is also an effective way of lowering the risk of developing melanoma cancer. Other sources of UV radiation are lamps and tanning beds.
What is Melanoma Cancer Symptoms?
One major Melanoma Cancer Symptoms of all skin cancers is changes in the skin. Other signs of skin cancer are ulcering skin and discolored in the skin. Visual appearance or use of a dermatoscope are used in the clinical diagnosis of all skin cancers and a skin biopsy is later used to confirm the results.
How to do Melanoma Cancer Treatment?
Melanoma Cancer Treatment can be done by the aforementioned surgery, chemotherapy, immunotherapy and even radiation therapy. However, the treatment of skin cancer depends on the type and the location of the cancer. Other factors is include the age of the patient and if the cancer is recurrence or primary. It’s also depends on melanoma cancer stages.
It is recommended by doctors that anyone who has a family history of melanoma should see a dermatologist at least once a year to make sure they are not developing melanoma themselves. Melanoma cancer can be easily treated if detected early and therefore unusual spots in the skin should be immediately examined by a physician.
